Natural Healing & Clarity of Mind

You’ve probably heard of CBD, if not actively, at least in passing. An abbreviation for cannabidiol, CBD is rapidly growing in popularity and gaining acceptance in use. But, what is it? Cannabidiol is a chemical extracted from a close cousin of marijuana plants, hemp, that provides numerous health benefits without an associated “high”. Hemp contains only minor amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in marijuana known to have psychoactive effects. Legal in most states, CBD can provide you with the same positive health effects of THC without the mental cloudiness or high that comes with marijuana use.

CBD vs THC? What’s the difference?

While CBD and THC have similar chemical structures, they have very different psychoactive effects on people. Plainly stated, the main difference between CBD and THC is the associated “high” . CBD has no psychoactive effects as it only loosely binds with cannabinoid receptors, whereas THC readily binds to cannabinoid receptors in the brain. As such, marijuana remains a Schedule I narcotic by the United States federal government, meaning the government has identified no currently accepted medical uses for the drug or the drug has a high potential for abuse. This might seem like a minor consideration, but medicinal and recreational marijuana use remains illegal in a significant number of states, similarly classified as heroin, LSD, ecstasy, and more. CBD use, in contrast, has well-established medical uses, including anti-anxiety and anti-seizure uses, and is consistently growing in acceptance and use across the nation.

What are the Health Benefits of CBD Use?

Cannabidioil (CBD) has shown favorable results in the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Pain
  • Seizures
  • Nausea
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

The primary benefit of CBD use may be that it affords treatment of the aforementioned conditions without an associated altered state. While the intoxicant effects of THC are desired by some, there’s also a contingent of the population that desires the medical benefits of marijuana without having to endure the associated high – that’s where CBD comes in. If you’re enduring pain, nausea, appetite issues, anxiety, depression, insomnia, etc., but you don’t want to risk the legal or mind-altering effects of THC use, CBD might be the answer for you.

How is Cannabidioil (CBD) Administered?

CBD is usually administered in capsule form or in dissolved oil solutions, although sublingual (under the tongue) and instranasal (through the nares of the nose) routes have been used. You’ll commonly find CBD capsules or oil solutions available at local retailers in different concentrations such as isolate, broad spectrum, or full spectrum. CBD can be ingested via oil tinctures, gummies, topicals, capsules, etc., just like marijuana/THC.

The Different Types of CBD Oil

CBD products are extracted from the cannabis plant, primarily hemp. It’s what happens after the extraction of the cannabinoids that determines the spectrum of the extract, however. The spectrum of the CBD references the amount of processing the CBD underwent. We explain the free types of CBD spectrums here:

  • Isolates – these products contain the highest concentration of CBD; usually 99%
  • Broad Spectrum – these products contain the entire spectrum of CBD, but no THC
  • Full Spectrum – these products contain the active compounds found in the cannabis plant, but less that 0.3% THC

Each one of the above products has its own unique advantages and disadvantages. Full spectrum, for instance, has amplified health benefits as due to all the active compounds working together. Unfortunately, if you use full spectrum CBD products routinely you risk a false-positive on a drug test due to the presence of THC (yes, even at 0.3% concentration).  Broad spectrum products provide you with the same effects as full spectrum, but there’s no concerns about a false-positive drug test as these products have no THC. Isolates are great for achieving the greatest CBD effects possible absent any concerns about altered mental status or false-positives on drug tests. If you’re considering the use of CBD products, it’s important that you consider the pros and cons of each spectrum of CBD and choose accordingly.

Managing pain, reducing anxiety, dealing with nausea – these are conditions that CBD can have a profoundly positive affect on.
